Beer review: Sharing pleasure that is impervious to distance

I have something I want to share with you. It is a beer review that might surprise you. Before I give you this review, I have to start with the ironic fact that I am not a passionate fan of beer. In fact, when I do drink beer, I prefer it dark, rich and thick. I am fond of stouts and dark ales that you could drink at room temperature on a cool Fall night not weaker or less personality forward beers. I am open minded and adventurous. This means I am always scouting for something new and interesting. That mean’s this week’s find was a seasonal beer: Voodoo Ranger Atomic Pumpkin Ale.

This post is about something we can share and enjoy together across the miles of internet and social distancing between us; damn good beer.

On the one hand, any beer that has “voodoo ranger” as part of its brand name makes me raise an eyebrow. Not because there is anything shocking but maybe because like alot of folks, there’s a bit of appeal in anything that sound subversive and dangerous. The words ‘voodoo rangers’ definitely inspire that feeling. What can I say? You never outgrow being a punk rock, and neon colored lace, 1980’s teen rebel at heart. Don’t judge me! 🙂

This unexpected gem promised pumpkin (good) with a hint of cinnamon (even better) and habanero (Wait! What? Are they serious?) as its presentation. It certainly caught my attention because I also happen to love heat and spice but I was pretty convinced that habanero was a 5 alarm fire waiting to happen in your mouth… and this was in the BEER?

Habanero pepper falls between Thai Chili peppers and Cayenne peppers and Ghost peppers.

I have never had a Ghost pepper but I have had Thai and Cayenne pepppers and I know from first hand experience that these are tiny and mighty flame throwers that can make untrained palates cry for mercy and a fire hose of water to make the burn stop. Here’s a Scoville Heat Scale with all the basic, known peppers for you to have a context of hotness.

Naturally, I had to try it. We are months into a pandemic and there aren’t enough words to describe the boredom that has dogged every day of it. There was no way I was going to pretend this daring, dangerous and seductive siren of a beer wasn’t calling my adventurous soul and daring me to expose my taste buds to its unexpected combination of liquid possibility.

I bought the beer, took it home and put two in the refrigerator. It hadn’t even crossed my mind to write a review about it yet. If it was disappointing, one beer for me and one for any visitor I wanted to encourage an early departure for. If it was good, I wanted the second one at the ready without the chill time. I would not be sharing it with a visitor unless I really liked the visitor. I am not a self serving person by nature but because pleasure is so rare and far between when I find pleasure, I am protective of like an eager lover.

First impressions aren’t the full impression.

I introduced the first swallow and waited to see what happened. A wonderful pumpkin taste filled my mouth and there was an instant shot of heat at the back of my throat as it went down. I waited for an after burn from the pepper but it didn’t come. I didn’t immediately taste cinnamon and decided that I should have introduced it slower, held it in my mouth a little longer.

The second swallow, I paused. I let it sit on my tongue inside my mouth for a longer moment before swallowing. I could taste the cinnamon now. It is light, subtle, flirtatious. You have to chase it with your attention to isolate it in the effervescent glee of your taste buds enjoying the pumpkin. Swallowing it, the heat remained at the back of my throat and again, there was no after burn. In fact, it was a gentle warm sensation that was just fiery enough that you knew it was there and could enjoy it for its unusual presence.

On the third swallow, I slowed down slightly longer so I could appreciate the pumpkin better. The pumpkin tastes like pumpkin, not pumpkin spice or pumpkin pie but pumpkin. It was light and authentic without being sweet, cloying or over-powering.

There was no over-compensating here for not being a real pumpkin.

Maybe because there IS real pumpkin juice in this? The ingredients say there are cloves in here but I can barely taste them they are incorporated so well. If you know anything about cloves, you know they have such a powerhouse personality that one little spice thorn can be tasted in a surface area 100 times larger than its size.

The trend in craft brews also seems to be making it potent. This beer certainly accomplishes that mission. At 6.4% compared to the industry average of 4.5%, I don’t recommend working your way through a 6 pack alone. On the other hand, it tastes so good, the temptation and ease with which to do exactly that is more real than you would think.

This beer moves across your palate like silk and the pumpkin and light spices is so sensually satisfying that it feels like a gossamer veil landing over you, lightly and playfully. And it makes you want more as soon as it is gone.

If you can get this beer in your area, I highly recommend it for those days when a nice drink would start your evening on a better note and hard liquor or wine are just not attractive options for that.

This beer was so surprising and pleasurable that it turned into a beer review blog post for you. In fact, it is dinner time and I might go get my second one now. Beer has calories so that counts as food, right? LOL

Salud!
